:No, it does not.  It automatically loads the kernel in that situation.

    Loads the kernel?  Or loads the module?

    Is ext2fs your root partition?  It could be related to the system
    not being able to find root due to the filesystem type being 
    unknown.  I'm not sure it's critical enough to take action now, but
    if someone wants to track it down I'm sure it could be fixed
    quickly.
