can't boot where should I look?

I've not been able to boot FreeBSD of any flavor or fork or OpenBSD on my
hardware.

I've got an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe motherboard.  

I'd like to take a shot at playing around with the kernel debugger and try to
find out what's happening but as I've never done it before I am not sure 
what sort of stuff to look for.
