Odd...  I have a 3rd IDE disk that is all fat32, mounted like so
from /etc/fstab:

/dev/ad2s1c             /mnt/backup     msdos   rw              2       2

It's been working fine, which doesn't help you much.  Can you mount any of
the Linux partitions (I assume they are ext2fs) read-only?
