on polluting X' install?

Exactly. The whole point of having /usr/local in hier(7) is storing ports there. And existing "dividing lines" are pretty arbitral, at best.


Of course, few well-known exceptions like core X itself (anything else?) don't move anywhere, at least now. Then, X should be modified to accept things placing app-defaults etc. in /usr/local.
