    Sounds like a bug that we should be able to track down pretty
    easily.   It sounds like init is stuck on something.

    Could you get a kernel crash dump when your machine is in a state 
    where several of these zombies exist, e.g. by ctl-alt-esc'ing and
    typing 'panic' + <return> + <return>.  That ought to generate a core.
