I tried 

# ifconfig re0 name lan0
# pfctl -s all
# pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf
# pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf
# pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf

on a 4core VM with that branch and didn't experience any failure.
