You may want to talk to Tim Robbins (tjr@freebsd) then. IIRC he had taken up
the old BSD-licensed utils and modernized the code. Lately he added a bunch
of features that people were missing and brought performance up to par with
the GNU-utils.

I'm not sure if he's still working on them, some weeks ago there was a
discussion about when to bring them into FreeBSD.
