Interesting... well, this is not an immediate problem, I'll bring it up 
again for discussion once I have something already working (currently I'm
playing with unionfs and thinking about Matt's suggestion of having it
detect recursions and therefore allow mount of subdirectories, which would
be immensely helpful, but I've done no kernel hacking before beyond small
single-line tweaks)
