  Recently there was a "little" thread about GCC 4.1 on the main GCC ml.
  Some (one?) of the developers stated that GCC4 is faster than GCC3 and
  that it produces much better code eg for PPC. I have no idea about what
  he was talking because I made the same observations as you did: slower
  compilation and bigger binaries (but maybe they are faster ;-)
