It could be XFree86/xorg (whatever you use) doesn't handle your video 
card right.  Try not using the Xv extension (xine -V Xshm) -- playback
will be jerky but you should get a picture.  Try also using mplayer
or vlc -- if the problem is your video card, those won't work either.

If you're using an oldish version of XFree86, try upgrading to xorg.  
You can even try copying a recent linux binary module for your card into 
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ (back up the existing one first.)
