    It kinda sounds like you don't have enough memory+swap.  How much memory
    does your box have and how much disk space have you reserved for swap ?

    I recommend running 'ps axl' occassionally during the day and observing
    the amount of VM that firefox, gnome, and other applications are using,
    and also doing a 'pstat -s' to observe swap usage.
