Cheap they aren't, but usually you can get 25% off list price by just
asking at IBM (some creativity in asking doesn't hurt, either),
many schools even get discounts well into the 40% range

Here they are at 50% for students, which leaves them slightly more expensive than other comparable laptops. The only other nice and light laptops i see around are Samsung, but i don't know if they are durable, nor if they work with Linux or FreeBSD.
