I installed bind9 from pkgsrc, copied the rc script to /usr/pkg/etc/rc.d

Make sure that directory is in your local_startup list.

/usr/pkg/etc/rc.d is in local_startup by default.

From `/etc/defaults/rc.conf`...
local_startup="/usr/pkg/etc/rc.d /usr/local/etc/rc.d/usr/X11R6/etc/rc.d" # startup script dirs.

and added:

named="NO"

Do you also have named_enable=YES set? If so, comment it out.

Nope! Here's my rc.conf so far...

(root@df)/etc/defaults# cat /etc/rc.conf
hostname="df.bone.servebeer.com"
ifconfig_lnc0="DHCP"
keymap="uk.cp850"
sendmail_enable="NONE"
sshd_enable="YES"
apache="YES"
apache_start="start"
smbd="YES"
nmbd="YES"
samba_start="YES"
mysqld="YES"
pure_ftpd="YES"
named="NO"
named9="YES"

named9="YES"
