pkg_src installation

Hi all,

I would like to know why is it nessary to unset the environment variable  
PKG_SRC
before launching bmake ?
Is there a configuration file that could avoid this command ?

When a compilation is too long, is it possible to stop the compile properly
and then resume later ?
