I remember how it was simple installing software (and upgrading to new versions) on BeOS: you should just unzip archive file and put its contents somewhere on HD. Is it a dream in bsd world?

Nope. You can get sources from $project and compile them yourself, using the usual ./configure, make and make install process. There you can decide where every piece will go, overwrite it with newer versions, etc. Only pain is, you have to look after dependencies on other software yourself, which is a major PITA in open sores projects. Everyone seems to think they need to include massive libraries to use some function they could implement themselves as well.
