yes, I saw that message before posting.
And it's not clear if the guy was using an ATAPI or a SCSI burner.
ATA support was not always working under FreeBSD-4x, and it took a while
before the "burncd" utility was fonctional for a broad range of ATA
burners.

In my case it's *SCSI* related, only SCSI, and the point is: cdrecord
is always playing nicely with pure SCSI devices.
