Well, I'm guessing that only the gnomesystemmonitor and the similar panel
applets have any *real* need for libgtop2, i.e. hardware monitoring.

I'll bet you can get almost everything else to compile properly just by
editing the makefiles to remove any mention of such things -- that's what
I did to install kde.  Depends on how badly you want the gnome desktop.

You confused me.  How do we know they work if you can't run them?
If gnomesystemmonitor or the equivalent panel applet are working
then someone must have appropriate patches for libgtop2.
